The movie “Chronicle” proved another one of my longstanding theories. Heroes are more likely to remain heroes provided they are part of an organization or surrounded by others with similar ideals.
Stay with me on this. No matter how motivated (Batman), noble (Superman), or determined (Green Lantern) heroes are, they will get tired of saving a culture that makes the same mistakes over and over again. You might say they do it for the people they save. I’m sure that can be very rewarding, but it’s not always worth the pain. So why do they do it?
I believe heroes continue doing good for the men and women fighting the good fight with them. I don’t think Batman or Superman would give up if they weren’t in a organization like the JLA. Other heroes may give up. I think that being in a group helps to make the constant struggle easier to bear. You see this in the military or law enforcement. You may start with the goal of wanting to help others, but you stick with it because of the people around you who have your back.
It’s just a theory, but I think it makes a difference in how good a character is.
