I had a chance to buy comics this weekend. It’s been a while. Buying comics can be hard in Kansas. I figured I’d talk a little bit about what I bought.
I bought the trade of Batman: The Court of Owls written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo. If that second name sounds familiar, it’s because he drew Spawn for many years. I wasn’t much of a fan of his work with Spawn. I think much of it had to do with the McFarlane influence. Once he took over for Todd McFarlane he had to adapt to that particular style. Now that he is free to do his own stuff, it is really good. If you haven’t picked up The New 52 Batman, it is worth a read.
I also picked up The New 52 Justice League. The artwork is good. Jim Lee rarely disappoints. The writing is a little off. I don’t think the characters “feel” right. It’s like they are caricatures of the characters they are. It’s as if the writer is trying too hard. It’s the opposite of what Marvel did with The Ultimates. They took their time, developed the characters and the plot, and still gave the reader the opportunity to relive classic Avengers themes.
The new Justice League moves too fast and relies on you knowing the characters, but without staying true to those characters. It feels like a rushed, jumbled mess. I think this will be the last issue I pick up. It’s not terrible, so I can understand why some readers might enjoy it, but it’s not for me.
