As Greg’s wife, I get dragged to a lot of comic book movies. Many of them have come out the first weekend of May, which is my birthday weekend (We’re seeing Iron Man 3 for my 30th birthday… yaaaaaaaaaaayyy). The Dark Knight Rises is the first comic book movie I’ve seen multiple times WILLINGLY.
Why? You all know why. Christopher Nolan is a genius, all the actors are excellent, and the story is powerful.
And let’s face it… Tom Hardy is super hot.
I don’t usually go gaga over uber-muscular men (Greg is so insulted by that last sentence). Tom Hardy turns me into a sex-crazed teenage girl. It’s embarrassing. I grew up Catholic and you just admit stuff like that.
Greg had doubts about Tom Hardy playing Bane after we saw him in Inception. Of course, Greg is a fan of Batman comics and knows how huge Bane is in the comics. Hardy looked like your average dude in Inception, but he was fully clothed the entire time.
Then we saw him in Bronson (don’t watch Bronson unless you want to be acquainted with Tom Hardy’s junk and you enjoyed A Clockwork Orange).
Then we saw him in Warrior. And we began to believe in Tom Hardy, and his Mount Everest of a torso.
Looks aside, Hardy is a wonderful actor. I liked him as Bane. Some folks, like my friend over at Everyday I’m Tumblin’, took issue with his voice, because it was more funny than scary. I think it was a nice touch. Hardy made Bane likeable. I liked that I questioned whether or not he was REALLY that bad of a guy. There’s more to him. He is a modern, complicated, and relatable villain. I liked that I could understand why people followed him and died for the cause.
Anne Hathaway was brilliant as Catwoman/Selena Kyle. Every other Batman movie director has made Catwoman into a dull sexpot, which insults my feminism. Women deserve better heroes, and Nolan and Hathaway delivered. Yes, Catwoman still looks good in leather, but what made her sexier this time around was that she was intriguing, smart, and strong.
We’re going to See The Dark Knight Rises again this weekend. I can’t wait!
