It’s odd, but this post involves two Snyders. The first is Scott Snyder who wrote Batman Zero Year, and Superman Unchained. The second is Zack Snyder who directed Man of Steel. This post was originally only supposed to talk about Scott Snyder’s work on Superman Unchained. However, I watched Man of Steel this weekend. I would be remiss if I didn’t talk a little about Zack Snyder too.

 

Additionally, it’s a Superman reference in the strip. I guess it’s just a Superman day all around.

 

A Tale of Two Snyder’s Part 2.

Scott Snyder’s a good writer and I bragged him up in my last post. However, Superman Unchained leaves much to be desired. It’s forced. Very forced. It’s almost like I’m not reading the same man’s work. The dialogue is canned, and unoriginal. I was really excited about the prospect of both the Batman and Superman runs. Now I’m not so sure I’ll finish Superman Unchained.

 

Jim Lee’s an amazing artist, but for this one he clearly phoned it in. Don’t get me wrong, I would kill to be able to draw like Jim Lee at his worst. Still, I’m not sure Superman is in his skill set. His panels feel rushed, and some are reminiscent of his last days at Wildstorm. Other panels are too busy and some of them are hard to see what’s going on. I feel guilty speaking so harshly about such a great artist, but it makes me want to read Batman Hush to remember how great he can be, and make me forget Superman Unchained.

 

Maybe Scott will find the right tone and pace to save this title. Maybe Jim will tighten up his work and get it cleaner. If anyone can do it, they can. I’ll give Superman Unchained one or two more issues. I want to give it a fair chance. A great team of this magnitude has earned every opportunity to keep me as a reader. I will tell you if it gets better in a month or two. As of right now, I wouldn’t recommend picking it up.

Onto Zack Snyder, and Man of Steel. I won’t give a full review, because I’m sure some people haven’t seen it. I will cover it next week, so people have time to watch it.

I’ve seen and heard reviews of “hated it” to “loved it” and everything in between. The movie is very polarizing. I think for some people, it’s not understanding Superman. For others it’s expecting Dark Knight and not getting it. To some it was just a fun action movie. To me, it was the Superman film I’ve been waiting to see for a long time.

You should watch it. It’s a fun film no matter how you look at it. Lot’s of action. Give it a go, and tell us what you think.

Makes you wonder about Batman’s no killing policy, and where the line is.

 

Speaking of Batman … (See what I did there) I just finished reading Batman: Zero Year and Superman Unchained. I’m going to do a two-part review. The first part is today, and the second part will be on Monday. Since both books are written by the same author, the title of this blog is: A Tale of Two Snyder’s.

 

A Tale of Two Snyder’s Part 1.

I’ve been reading Scott Snyder’s and Greg Capullo’s work on Batman since they started after the launch of The New 52. Their work is amazing. I was excited at the prospect ofZero Year, and I was right to be excited about it. The art is great and the story is already making me hungry for more. I think this will be a great story arc to pick up.

 

Snyder handles the characters of the Batman world very well. He really gets it. His Batman is strong-willed and tough, with a hint of crazy. I like it. He’s a tempered edge. The storytelling is a driving rhythm that keeps you moving. Almost every issue, cliffhanger or not, makes me want to read the next issue.

 

Capullo’s work is something I have briefly touched on. It just keeps getting better. Zero Year does some interesting things. I like the artistic decisions made, even the one we were concerned about. (Side note: If I hadn’t made the joke, I wouldn’t have even noticed the purple gloves.) I also like the visual cues to Batman’s past. I am looking forward to more eye candy as the story progresses.

 

If you’ve never looked at The New 52 Batman, I highly recommend you do. Especially Batman: Zero Year. I think you’ll like what you read.

Point of Origin

Sorry for the delay. I was finishing paperwork for my new job. I am now employed by Senior Systems. I will be doing HTML/JSP work for private schools across the nation.

 

Now that job concerns are over, we will look to find an apartment. Things are on the right track now. I am excited and ready for my wife to be up here with me.

 

I haven’t bought comics yet, but I will be picking something up this afternoon. I’m not sure what yet, but I’ll find something. I always do. I’ll review whatever I pick up on Friday.

The Answer

The Answer

We told you the answer, but we wanted to do a strip to solidify the response. Also, it was a good strip to get Rob back into the flow. A week off from drawing can make you a little rusty.

 

I’m in book three of the Thanos Rising series. Rob and I had a discussion about this comic idea a long time ago. Back when Origin came out. I expressed a desire to see Marvel do an origin story for many other characters. Thanos was top of my list. Finally, after all these years, I got my wish.

 

I’ll lead off by telling you I’m a huge Thanos fan. I like Marvel galactic characters more than most earthbound characters. I love the Silver Surfer, Nova, Adam Warlock, and so on. So I’m an easy mark for this title.

 

With only three issues to go on, I can’t tell you how it will be as a whole series. However, I don’t want you to have to wait if you were interested in picking it up. Start picking it up now, and Give it a read. The artwork is solid and the writing is compelling.

 

Also, the upcoming Marvel movies are going involve Thanos. You may want to learn a little bit about him. Before the movies come out, I would also pick up a trade of The Infinity Gauntlet and The Infinity Wars.

Mixed Up Pt. 3

Mixed Up Pt. 3

Last of my strips. I hope you liked them. Rob has told me several times that he was thankful for the week off. That makes it worth it. Don’t worry, he’ll be back on Monday.

 

I’m glad to be back in Mass.I can buy comics again. I got a gift cards from my in-laws, and Rob’s folks. I am milking those babies until I get a job. Once I have a job, the flood gates will open.

 

Starting next week, the focus of the blog will be changing. Rob and I are still hammering out some details. When we started we wanted the blog to cover some basic ideas, comic theory, and current comic events. However, the heart of the blog was supposed to be for comic reviews. That can’t happen when you live in Kansas, and can barely buy one comic a month.

 

Now that I’m here I can finally do the reviewing I’ve wanted to do. I’m starting to develop how I’m going to review my current reading selections. I want the reviews to be enjoyable. Monday I will cover Marvel’s title “Thanos Rising” and what I think of it. I hope you are looking forward to it. I know I am.

Strip two of my work, and things have gotten out of hand.

 

Rob is  enjoying his week off. He should. He earned it.

 

After I finished these strips, I realized I don’t want to do what he does. I wouldn’t be able to keep the comic up on my own. It’s hard work to make three comics a week.

 

My time doing these strips was fun, but I am glad I’m done.

 

In other news, things in Massachusetts are finally settling down. I have my first job interview today. My computers is back and working. I am settled in my temporary home. Overall, it’s getting better.

Mixed Up Pt 1.

Mixed Up Pt 1.

First off, and most importantly, Amber said YES! So congrats to Rob and Amber.

 

You are maybe wondering why today’s strip looks a little different.

 

Answer: I made this week’s strips (all but the first panel of today’s strip). I did it for Rob’s birthday. I wanted to give him a week off from drawing comics. I told him to pick a week that he would like to not have to worry about drawing. He picked this week.

 

Rob has very steadily put out three comics a week for almost two and a half years. We’ve had a few hiccups. Some were my fault, some his, and some out of our control. Still, we’ve been very reliable. He has worked hard to put out a strip consistently. He deserves a break.

 

Rob is taking a week off and you get the full force of my insanity. I hope everyone enjoys it.

Manly Bumps

Buckle up, it’s a long one.

 

This is a topic I’ve been meaning to get to. A few weeks ago we linked to this article on Facebook. It brought a couple of questions to mind.

 

My first question was, “Am I sexist?” First, I don’t have many issues on being an anything-“ist”. Well, except maybe an elitist. I don’t have enough concern for other people to hate them based on gender, race, sexual orientation, or creed. So the idea of me being sexist surprised me.

 

I like some classic uniforms of female comic characters, but does my holding fast to a character’s current “branding” mean that I condone things like this? No. No, I do not.

 

So okay, I’m not sexist. I am brand loyal. Despite what others might tell you, the clothing on a hero or heroine is as much a part of the character as their powers. You can’t just change them arbitrarily. We’ve seen how that works out.

 

That brings me to my second question, “Can we be open to change?” We need to accept some changes in order for comics to grow. More importantly, so comics will continue to get made.

 

I’m going to use Rob as an example. Rob is a typical geek. He is often resistant to change.  He knows his cannon, and sticks to superhero comics. He’s not being sexist. He is accustomed to seeing Emma Frost in a white corset and stockings. Changing her might lose Rob as a reader. However, if he can let go of the past and be excited about the future, he will still read the comic. (Rob is not sexist and will read a comic as long as it’s good.)

 

This change is a group effort. The creators should make changes that fit the character, are practical, and are good for the story. The readers need to be open to change and not jump ship when something gets altered. The people that want to see changes in comics need to pick them up and support the changes with their dollar vote.

 

This movement has given me a lot to think about. I hope it has made you think a little too.

 

One last note: all of this includes supporting women creators. If we want to see changes and growth in the comic book industry, we need to support those who can offer unique ideas. Check out Surly Queen and Renae De Liz in the links to the right. Support these talented ladies.

Bad Men

My wife has REALLY gotten into Mad Men. I like the show, but it drives me a little crazy. While writing this, the reason occurred to me.

 

I am a Superman fan. I am the rare person that loves the pure hero. I don’t care for the conflicted, damaged, or anti-hero. Don and Co. are all too damaged for me. As soon as I get to liking a character, they do something to make me dislike them. For most people, this is probably the best part of the show.

 

I understand it makes for good characterization, but it’s not for me. I can’t deal with the duplicity.

 

Between episodes we’re packing, and getting ready to move. Maybe I’m weird, but I think a empty house is exciting. Houses, by nature, should feel stable. However, when you’re moving the air is electric with potential. Potential for the people leaving and potential for the people coming. I love it.
