Hey everyone, this is Rob. You may or may not have noticed that we didn’t have a strip on Friday. My mother fell ill with chest pains on Thursday. I needed to be there for her and the family. I’ve been at the hospital almost the entire weekend.
This emergency came out of nowhere, as this kind of thing usually does, and it rocked me to the core (not in the good way … like the Rammstein concert I went to last weekend). No, this event made me want to change my lifestyle.
Smoking has caused much of my families’ health issues. My parents are heavy smokers, and my dad has health issues due to smoking. I thought my mom was still healthy. In my ignorance, I figured I got a 50/50 shot at being okay. Now that my mom has been hit with the same thing as my dad, I realize that isn’t true. If there WAS a steel-toed boot on God’s foot, he punted me in the head with it.
I am a very heavy smoker. A buddy from college once told me, “You smoke like a crematorium.” As of 6:30 p.m. Sunday, I quit smoking. This past hour has been the hardest hour of my life. I’m sitting here at my computer, writing this, and I keep looking for my cigarettes. This is going to be hard … However, it will be good for me. At least that’s what my friends and family keep telling me. As I was writing this, a good friend of mine called to tell me that he’s going to quit with me. Now I have someone to yell at when these nicotine fits get to me, and vice versa.
I also wanted to thank you all for keeping my mom and family in your thoughts and prayers. She had triple bypass surgery Sunday morning. She is doing as well as anyone in her position can be. I love you mom.
