It was a tough weekend. I lost a good friend of mine to a plane crash. Staff Sergeant Austin Anderson died after saving a friend of his from the wreckage of the burning plane. You can read the article here.
I met SSgt. Anderson when I went to M.O.S. (Military Occupational Speciality) School. He and I were going to school to be generator mechanics. We shared many experiences in the Marine Corps after that, all the way up until I got out of the Marines last August. We kept in touch online after that.
We here at Five and Dime talk about super heroes. We talk about them often. We just watched The Avengers save the world on the big screen. With all the heroics in comics we forget what it takes to be a real hero. It takes incredible strength of character to put others before yourself. That is especially difficult in dire circumstances.
SSgt. Anderson was a real hero. It’s not only because of his sacrifice, but because of his character. He was a source of inspiration to many. He raised the spirit and motivation of everyone around him. He was always there for a deep conversation peppered with side-splitting laughter. He was a big influence on me and my Marine Corps career. While I was shocked and saddened by the circumstances of his death, I wasn’t surprised by his heroism because it was consistent with his character and the way he conducted himself everyday.
It was a privilege to have known him. He will be missed.

Sorry we’re late. I have been traveling all day. I don’t have the words right now. I am still digesting my thoughts on the comic convention. I will have it for you on Wednesday.
Thanks for stopping by our booth and supporting us. If you are new, welcome.
I love that there are comic specific pick up lines. I can’t imagine a situation where they would ever be appropriate, but they do exist. Plus, bonus points to Sloth. Good for him for still believing he could date Missy.
Finals start next week. It all comes down to this next week. Not that I’m close to failing. In fact, I could fail my finals and still pass all my classes. However, I have a straight “B” average to maintain.
I also have artwork of my own to be working on over break. As I finish I’ll post links to my work for everyone to see. It’s going to be interesting next month, because I’ll be linking to my artwork and Rob is going to write a couple of strips. It’s like we’re in topsy-turvy land. (Little Nemo: The Dream Master, reference for the old time gamers.)
Everyone have a fun weekend. Drive fast and make bad choices.
We welcome Edgar back, and just in time for a the weather to change. We are going to unveil his storied and tragic past. Be sure to check back with us to see who he is, and how he came to be. If you are new to Five and Dime or forgot who Edgar was be sure to check out his introduction.
We added a new menu called “Friends” this week. We appreciate the support we’ve gotten from fellow artists and friends, so we wanted to return the favor. Go there and check out some cool sites, and kill some time.
A word of warning: Geeks don’t handle the mentioning of undergarments. It can throw us off. Mostly because the limited amount of experience most geeks have with ladies underthings.
On the business side of the house, Rob has started drawing the strips with a wacom tablet. I think he’s doing a fine job. It takes a big leap of faith to jump off of the paper to the computer screen. We were a little concerned about a drop in quality, but so far so good. This should increase his production speed. It doesn’t mean the strip will get up sooner. (The post have been later due to my busy class schedule.) It’s nice, though, that he is improving his skills and moving forward. So good job to Rob.
