Hack & Slash

Flash’s account got hacked. This story arc will last for a couple of strips. Be sure to come back Wednesday to see what happens next.

Finals are almost over. I have two tests, and a paper to finish. After I am finished with those, I will be done with my undergrad. I am walking away with a Bachelors in Computer Systems Technology. I had the graduation ceremony this weekend, but I still have to go though some finals. K-State holds the Salina campus’ graduation a week earlier than the main campus.

Now it’s time to move on to another adventure. My wife and I will be moving, and getting new jobs soon. It’s all very exciting.

Speaking of exciting, be looking for a site redesign in September. We’ll tell you about new features as we get closer to the relaunch. We’ll also ask for input on what you would like to see and do. We want to know what you think.

Thanks for your understanding this past week. I was very busy.

Now, it’s time to go pack.

Geek Hierarchy Lvl 4.

LEVEL 4: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

Dungeon & Dragons is the oldest and most recognized level of all geekdom. Being a dice-roller has stamped you as a geek from the very start. This level has had very few changes throughout the years. I would call it the godfather of geekdom. It’s still around and still has devoted followers.

Throughout the previous levels you can still find “normal” people (if normal is a good word for any geek). Rob suggests I use “casual” instead of normal. You can have a casual interest in video games, comics and CCG’s. Not so for Dungeons and Dragons. I am sure there are a few, but I’ve never met a geek who is a casual dice-roller. (Remember a geek as defined by me is someone who can say “Well Actually…” ) If you can correct someone in D&D, you are too far gone to be a casual dice-roller.

I don’t know many dice-rollers. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few here and there. I tend to get along with dice-rollers better than gamers. Dice-rollers don’t suffer from the ego mania that gamers do. They also keep this geekiness hidden better. Sometimes you will be surprised to find out someone you’ve known for years is a dice-roller.

Despite my appreciation for the dice-rollers as a group, I think dice-rolling is one of the most dangerous geek levels. Flash makes it sound like a drug, and that’s kind of how it looks. Whenever I talk to someone who was or is a dice-roller, they talk about it like an addict. They never “were” a dice-roller they always “are” a dice-roller. They are always looking for a group. They may be in remission, but they are always looking for the next hit.

It may not be for me, but it’s a classic form of geekdom. Other levels may change with time and fads, but imagination never fades. As long as friends can get together, use their imagination and have a good time, there will always be D&D.

Geek Hierarchy Lvl 3.

LEVEL 3: (TABLE-TOP) GAMERSFirst off, let me restate that I am not picking on any one type of geek. Flash is just doing it for the humor factor. We are a comic strip, after all.

The Gamer level is comprised of those that Play Collectible Card Games (CCG’s), and includes table top gamers. If you want see these geeks in their natural habitat, you must go to gaming tournaments. They can also be found in comic stores where they have tables set up. They don’t often mix with geeks of other levels and tend to be the most reclusive of the geeks.

The average geeks of this level are normal people. I know lots of geeks on this level. Partly due to the closeness to the comic level and because I have dabbled in playing CCG’s. The extreme geeks on this level should be avoided. I have two problems with extremely geeky gamers:

One, they drive off normal customers. Extremely geeky gamers are usually a group of friends who get together and play, and they are typically yelling about something and being obnoxious. They have no consideration for other customers and treat the store like it’s their basement.

Two, they possess impotent rage. I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone into a comic store and had to listen to gaming nerd rage. It’s not the swearing that bothers me, it’s the ferocity behind their rants. They argue about their games like a coach argues a blown call in the super bowl. IN EVERY GAME! Chill out people. I like a good competition, but empty threats and screaming are not cool.

It’s not bad to play card games. I used to play Magic when I was younger. I’ve played a little Pokemon and WWE as well. I also like obscure board games like Settlers of Catan, Hive, and Last Night on Earth, and normal games like Scrabble, Chess, Monopoly, and Pictionary. I like games and competition. This is a level I could partake in if I could handle the extreme geeks. Playing games is fun, but not with people that don’t let it be fun.

Drinking Games

Rob and I are notoriously bad at playing video games while drinking together. For reasons unknown Rob gets a big mouth and says things that force me to hurt him. It’s not the comments it’s the amount. I could care less about what he says. It’s just that he never lets up. If you play video games drunk with Rob for an hour, 50 minutes of will be trash talk. Five minutes for a smoke break and five for menu selection and loading.

So here’s how it goes, Rob sits there pushing the controller’s buttons and my buttons. I snap and start punching him in the stomach. (At this point the controller is out of his hands as he is curled up defending himself.) With no controller in hand, he says he’s sorry makes a big fuss over it. Then as soon as the controller is back in his hand it starts up again.

Normally, drunken Rob is a happy Rob. In fact he can be too nice when drunk. He is an apologetic drunk by nature. However, putting a controller in his hand can turn him into one of the most insufferable bastards on the planet. I’m not a very nice person to be around in general, so antagonizing me while drunk is not a good idea. I have been known to brandish sharp objects. So out of concern for our friendship, we don’t get drunk and play video games together.
