I wanted to give you a chance to back out. I hate spoilers. I am sure there are other reviews out there. Reviews written by better writers than myself. If you’re reading this, you probably just want my impression of Ironman 3. I enjoyed it.

 

I had the unique experience to watch the first two Ironman films, The Avengers, then Ironman 3 in the theater. It was great, and the environment made it even better.

 

I have one issue with Ironman 3. One small issue. I was a little put off by Pepper saving Tony right at the end. Only because the movie is “Ironman”, and call me crazy, but I think the title character should get the killing blow.

 

For that matter, Stark could’ve been in his suit more during the film. However, I have this problem with most comic movies. I know the actors want face time, but I go to the movie to watch Ironman. I don’t go to watch Robert Downey Jr. (The worst perpetrator of this comic movie crime was, the Spier-man franchise. Too much Toby Maguire.)

 

Despite these two small issues, I still really liked the movie. I will be seeing it at least one more time. The movie had the same flow, and feel of the previous two. It was funny, and had action. I liked how they handled The Mandarin. (Overall, I like how Marvel films have used science to explain the magic that exists in their movie universe.) I think the film was a good punctuation mark to stop on while they move on to other properties.

 

On deck: Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Man of Steel.

I managed to watch Spider-Man last night. (A personal thanks to my awesome wife, who went with me to see it on our two-year anniversary.) I have three thoughts on the movie:

1. It was better than the first Spider-Man film. It was a major improvement over the last two. It was well done all the way through. I liked the gratuitous use of classic Spider-Man views throughout the movie. The Acting was solid and the story was very good. On a whole, it was a step in the right direction to right the wrongs of the past.

2. It was kinda sad. I know what happens because I’ve read the comics. If you haven’t seen the movie you may want to skip over this next part. SPOILER ALERT: There was a lot of death in the movie. For example, Peter losing his parents. You know it happens in the comic, but it’s different for it to be a part of the story. Uncle Ben was clearly going to happen. Chief Stacy was a surprise, and it clearly led to a death in the next movie.

3. I have no idea who was in the sting. I think stings are great, but it’s hard to be excited about it when you can’t see who it’s supposed to be.

I enjoyed the film and I’d go see the next one. I’d still be a little cautious. I enjoyed the first one last time around, and they broke my heart. This one may yet stand the test of time. For now we have to wait.

I haven’t watched the new Spider-Man movie yet. I plan to see it this weekend. I keep hearing good things about it. I was waiting to see what others said before I watched it. I’ve been hurt by too many disappointing comic movies. I will post a review on Monday.

Also, I don’t hate Spider-Man.

Mental Help

I just watched the movie “Chronicle.” I didn’t see it in the theaters. I knew a little about it and it looked good, but I just didn’t get the chance to see it. For those that don’t know, it’s a movie about three high school students who stumble upon an alien-looking artifact and get telekinetic powers.

The film strengthened two theories I’ve held about superpowers, and what would happen if someone in the real world got superpowers.

First, will a human who gains superpowers be a hero or a villain? Rob and I have had this discussion MANY times. We decided long ago that the reason Rob and I don’t get super powers is because we would be villains. Rob is one of the nicest people I know, but he would most likely turn to power-abuse. I believe, no matter how good a person is, taking a step toward superhuman is too tempting to abuse your powers.

For example, Rob has road rage like a mad lust-driven water buffalo. If he had superpowers, and you cut him off on the road, he would blow up your car. I’m not saying he would always do it intentionally, but his immediate response would be to ensure that you cannot cut anyone off ever again. This would happen with one the nicest people I know.

It’s not about who you are right now, but how the powers redefine who you are. I believe that the powers would have to go to a heroically-minded individual for them to choose to become a hero, or at the very least not abuse their powers.

Oh, and if I got superpowers …
